Navistar's Spiral of Despair: the Thoughts of Shine and Piggot

Or perhaps Adventures in Cognition would be more appropriate. We don't know, but here's the reason for our bewilderment. We present it without edits or without comment.

I could not  understand how Chris Patterson could call Dixon's blog
"straightforward and balanced" when in fact Dixon's is a 100% attack
against Navistar which Dixon himself called just his own "OPINION" (
Dixon himself wrote the word "OPINION" with all caps) and failed to
back it up with any facts even after I challenged him to do so.

I found Patterson's remark so remarkable that it led me to click on his
name posted at the end of his message above, and then I realized it was
not remarkable at all. I saw that he is affiliated with Daimler Truck
Division which has adopted SCR and is competing against Navistar's EGR.

What made his remark unremrakable is that his concealement of his
vested interest in disparaging EGR is consistent with Daimler's
corporate culture.

When Daimler took over Chrysler, the then major stockholder of
Chrysler, Kirk Kirkorian, sued Daimler for having taken over Chrysler
through fraud. He lost the case, but merely on technical grounds.

A year or so later, Daimler's Freightliner sold a company in the UK to
MAN. After MAN bought the company, MAN sued Freightliner for
fraudulently concealing liabilities, and MAN won in court.

Some years earlier, Daimler's Freightliner used whatever means to
attain its end of driving Navistar out of the Class 8 business, on the
principle that the end justifies the means.

Now Mr. Patterson of Daimler without making full disclosure of his
affiliation with Daimler,  publishes a characterization of EGR in the
truck industry press that purports to be objective when in fact it is
motivated by competitive interest of Daimler against Navistar, again a
case of the end justifying the means.

Actually, we will comment. Patterson made no attempt to conceal his identity. Establishing that same identity would not, we would have thought, proved too onerous to anyone with half an eye on the US truck market. Nor would we have thought that it should have proved necessary. He was, until very recently, the CEO of Daimler Trucks North America, a role that could be hardly be described as covert.

Our recollections of the ERF affair are at some variance with Shine's. We believe that, at the time, Western Star Holdings was a publicly traded company (NASDAQ / TSX). The Comptroller of ERF, during its WSH stewardship, prepared financial reports that offered certain tax advantages. A fuller synopsis of the case may be found here.

Readers may consider these to be unfounded and scurrilous allegations. Shine would rather that we kept ourselves busy with facts, not opinions, so we will return instead to Patterson's comment, in which we can see no evidence of the 'disparaging EGR' of which Shine speaks. From what we can establish from Shines's perambulations of mind,  Navistar is the victim of a conspiracy that goes back many years. 

We think. In truth, we have no idea what s/he is talking about, and quite how germane it is to a debate concerning Navistar's adoption of EGR at EPA 10. Let us agree to leave the conspiracies to Dan Brown.

But whilst we're on the subject of odd comments, try this one for size.

I wonder if this is the same Chris Patterson that is President & CEO of
Daimler Trucks? We should get together sometime, share some drinks, and
figure    out another way to make customers believe that adding a 2nd
fuel tank, gauge, electronics, and additional bracketry is a good
thing.

We'll keep the IP Address to ourselves on this one. Of course, it may well be that Navistar has an employee with a name very close to that of Paccar's CEO. Or maybe not. Maybe it's just a bit of pot stirring. Who knows?
