The second instalment of Tipper 2008 focuses on Muckaways, with an established favourite taking on the new kid on the block and a wannabe.

The muckaway class of 2008 featured three very different 8x4 tippers, from Japan, Germany and Sweden, with one thing in common – EGR.

It’s a sector where the work has changed considerably over the past decade, driven by safety considerations and a very British quest for payload. European operators in this sector use much heavier chassis.

Here, you’re more likely to see concrete crushed on site rather than shock-loaded in lumps and, although chassis still need to get down and dirty, single-reduction axles are starting to spread from aggregate tippers to their muckaway counterparts. From the driver’s perspective, standards have improved considerably with air-conditioned cabs and big engines. Adoption of automated transmissions and electric sheeting is also increasing, although they may require training.
