Testers' Choice 2008: Introduction

Testers' Choice 2008 LogoJudging by the state of some market sectors, you might suppose that Commercial Motor’s 2007 testing year was a little on the light side. But a look back at the issues reveals that we actually carried out 37 full solo road tests – one more than in 2006.

True, the middleweight tipper and distribution sectors were under-represented, and our tally of two used truck tests was less than we’d have liked, but we eventually managed to test at least one 44-tonne tractor from each of the Big Seven manufacturers.

One innovation was the first CM Mega Test, in which we put eight 3.5-tonne vans through a test process that spanned four days – including a two-day run from Surrey to Mid Wales and back with four drivers getting to take the wheel of each contender.

We intend to repeat the process in 2008 with at least two more categories – larger and smaller.

Of course, we continued our group-test programme, looking at specialist areas including cabs, air-con, tippers and Antarctic operations. In total, we tested 107 vehicles during the year and drove many more for shorter spells.

And with seven LGV licence holders on our full-time editorial staff, we remain well placed to bring you the best product coverage in the industry.

Here’s where our testers take their annual look back at all the vans, pickups and trucks tested during 2007 to choose their favourites.
