Part one of this year’s Tipper Lite test focuses on the 3.5-tonne chassis-cab sector, with the field split between European and Asian designed trucks. Which of the nine will take home the crown?

In a dusty limestone quarry less than a mile from Junction 10 of the M40, nine 3.5-tonne chassis-cab tippers gathered to see which would be crowned Tipper Lite 2009 ‘Best in Show’.

There was the usual split between European and Asian products, but with Nissan and Renault offering up badge-engineered Cabstar and Maxity, the waters were a little muddier than in previous years.

Traditionally, the cab-over designs offer the UK lightweight alternatives to the European cab-back approach. Now, the Asian products are looking to compete on European strong points such as cab comfort, internal storage and road handling.

With the construction industry being hit hard by the recession, now is the time to make sure transport managers are aware of the full range of product available to the industry. Pricing, body/payload potential, handling and driving performance, cab comfort and specification are all considered as we get down to some seriously dirty competition.
